Description of the job

Introduction

About Sun Metals
Located just 15km from the heart of Townsville, Sun Metals operates one of the world’s most advanced zinc refineries. We produce high-quality Special High Grade Zinc and Zinc Alloy, along with valuable by-products including Sulfuric Acid, Copper, Cadmium, and Zinc Ferrite. Our operations span the full refining process—Roasting, Leaching, Purification, Electrolysis, and Casting—with products supplied to both domestic and international markets.

At Sun Metals, our mission is clear: To be the best zinc refinery in the world. For us, that means leading the industry in three key areas:

  1. Safety – putting people first every day
  2. Environmental Responsibility – protecting the planet as we operate
  3. Competitiveness – driving performance, innovation, and value

Join Our Team as a Sun Metals Environmental Advisor!

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Advisor to join our operations team, providing structured, risk-based environmental support across refinery and port operations. This role is ideal for a professional with 3-5 years of mining, refining, or heavy industry experience, looking to bring their skills closer to home in a town-based position while maintaining exposure to complex environmental challenges.

Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clear, practical environmental advice to operational teams, ensuring compliance with Environmental Authority obligations and ISO 14001:2018 Environmental Management System standards.
  • Lead or contribute to investigations into environmental incidents, spills, and exceedances, applying root cause analysis and preparing defensible reports for senior management and regulators.
  • Coordinate and mentor technicians delivering groundwater, surface water, air quality and noise monitoring programs, ensuring data integrity and timely reporting.
  • Support project planning, shutdowns, and infrastructure upgrades with structured risk assessments and control recommendations.
  • Facilitate internal and external audits, maintain compliance registers, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, site walkdowns, and training sessions to embed environmental awareness across all workgroups.
  • Engage with regulators and external stakeholders as required, representing Sun Metals in a professional, solution-focused manner.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in environmental compliance within mining, refining, or other heavy industry operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of Queensland environmental legislation and regulatory reporting obligations.
  • Proven track record leading or supporting structured incident investigations and risk management programs.
  • Proficient in environmental data management systems (MonitorPro or similar), with strong analytical skills.
  • Effective communicator, confident in liaising with site teams, contractors, and regulators.
  • Current manual driver’s licence (boat licence desirable).

Skills And Experiences

Why Join Us?

  • Townsville-based role: Work just 15km from the CBD, enjoy a short commute and return home each night.
  • No FIFO fatigue: Experience the complexity and challenge of a major hazard facility without fly-in/fly-out travel or remote camp living.
  • Competitive remuneration aligned to your skills and experience, with opportunities for career development.
  • Live the tropical North Queensland lifestyle, great weather, beaches, reef access and a strong local community, while advancing your environmental career.
  • Be part of a close-knit, high-performing environment team where your expertise directly shapes site performance and compliance outcomes.
